CONSEQUENCES

Selected Consequences;
Evolution is True and Christianity, and All Religions, Are Not

EVOLUTION

"Science wants to know the mechanism of the universe, religion the meaning.

The two cannot be separated.”

~ Charles Townes, physicist

“The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to believe. But our preferences do not determine what’s true”

~  Carl Sagan

Evolution

It is not only true, but a good understanding of the evidence for it reveals that there is no planning and no goals despite what many wish to impose upon it. Huge extinctions, random mutations and the mechanism of natural selection that produces much waste and suffering without any planning for future changes. There is no evidence of the supernatural in nature. For a discussion of terms go to evolution and natural selection, this site.

It does not discount God, but if a theistic God (personal one that for example answers prayers and interacts with His creation) used it or allowed it, this God is not worth worshipping as detailed in previous sections. Nor does it discount a deistic god who created the original conditions for evolution to derive species and then left to perhaps play cosmic golf. And this God leaves behind a system of species creation riddled with waste and suffering without caring. Science is very caustic to religions because religions eventually make enough assertions to history and reality that can be falsified. Their major claims must then be rejected.

There are no religious origin narratives that successfully accommodate science and don’t sacrifice their scriptures or common sense. See for example my discussion of theistic evolution. Thus, the top scientists in the world (National Academy of Sciences in America for example) are overwhelmingly non-religious and mostly atheists.

Many years ago a survey of NAS scientists revealed 72% atheists, 21% “agnostic” and only 7% theists - believing in a personal God. Most philosophers are also atheists - 62% by one study. Atheism is a natural conclusion after studying science and philosophy and its no wonder so many religious organizations fight vigorously against it. Evolutionary theory eventually indirectly promotes materialism and naturalism, mortal enemies of theism.
